How do I check whether my Melbourne transit card covers a Geelong train?

I want to use a regional V/Line service and am unsure whether city ticketing rules apply.

Use the current PTV and V/Line fare information for the exact origin, destination and service before travelling. Regional ticketing can vary by route and reservation type, so do not assume every V/Line trip works like a city tram.
