How do I pay for trams, trains and buses in Melbourne?

I am visiting Melbourne and keep seeing references to myki and the Free Tram Zone. What should I check before my first journey?

For an airport or regional journey, check the operator and ticket separately. A local tram payment method does not automatically cover every coach or regional service.

Tram travel wholly inside the Free Tram Zone does not need a tap. Once a tram journey goes beyond that zone, tap on as required. Trains and buses have their own tap rules, so check the current guidance rather than following old forum fare advice.

Use Transport Victoria's current visitor guide to choose an accepted payment method for your journey. Myki is the established option, and contactless payment is available on supported services; check the service you plan to use before relying on one card.
