Our short birthday trip is mainly for shopping, markets, museums and dinner rather than an early flight.

Compare CBD or Southbank rooms by the actual walk to shops, trams and dinner. Confirm market opening days and any exhibition you especially want to see.

Stay in the city for those activities. An airport hotel would add a transfer on most days and give fewer easy evening choices.
