Where should two car-free seniors stay between Southern Cross and a Melbourne Airport departure?

We arrive by train from Adelaide, fly out later and want a clean, interesting hotel near trams, restaurants and perhaps a theatre.

    Map the exact walk from Southern Cross with luggage and the departure transfer, but do not choose solely for station proximity. A central hotel may make the stay more pleasant.
