The Tote

Set right beside Collingwood’s Keith Haring mural, The Tote remains Melbourne’s unapologetic, sticky-carpet live music institution. Bands roar through the front bar and the cavernous back room, while punters pack in for raw sets without sports screens or poker machines to dull the room. Locals treat the place as common ground—equal parts seasoned rockers and fresh indie crowds leaning over worn timber with cheap pints of pale ale. The graffiti-coated walls and stark bathrooms show decades of wear, but when the amps crank, the grit fades into the deafening bass. Later on, between sets, cold beers in the courtyard offer a welcome breather before the next assault on the floor.
