About Kafeneion "emeis & emeis" Melbourne

Upstairs in the storied Melbourne Supper Club space, Kafeneion trades casual street souvlaki for soul-warming Athenian home cooking. Opposite Parliament, the candlelit salon hums beneath vintage lighting and its signature circular window. Regulars start with whipped cod roe and ouzo-cured kingfish before settling into generous slow-cooked lamb scented with wild oregano, crisp sweetbreads, or rich beef cheek stifado. Bottles of crisp Santorini assyrtiko and balanced house negronis flow steadily across intimate leather booths. An order of warm, syrupy portokalopita wraps up the evening.

  • Athenian Comfort Plates: Slow-braised lamb with oregano, tender beef cheek stifado, and crispy lemon sweetbreads served in sharing portions.
  • Supper Club Setting: Intimate candlelit first-floor salon with vintage leather seating and a curved street-facing window opposite Parliament.
  • Regional Pours & Mezedes: Regional Greek wines from Santorini and Crete alongside house-crafted negronis, whipped cod roe, and citrusy filo cake.

Why Dine at Kafeneion 'emeis & emeis'

Authentic Athenian comfort food, rare regional Greek wines, and vintage supper club intimacy on Spring Street.

  • Soulful Athenian Comfort Cooking

Rather than standard street food skewers and gyros, the kitchen focuses on traditional Greek slow cooking, braised beef cheek stifado, tender lamb with wild oregano, and savoury baked pasta.

This isn’t the kind of place serving gyros and pita bread. Kafeneion transports you straight into an old Yiayia’s kitchen, where slow-cooked dishes and soulful flavours take centre stage.

  • Curated Regional Greek Cellar

An extensive and curated wine list showcases regional Greek terroirs, featuring crisp Santorini Assyrtiko, aromatic Peloponnese pours, and rare Aegean selections tailored to olive oil-rich cooking.

the wine list is practically a book, an interesting read with wines from the peloponnese region to santorini….a variety of dry, floral and citrusy varieties, all ideal companions for the traditional olive oil-based dishes to come.

  • Flexible Show-Schedule Hospitality

Warm, accommodating front-of-house staff coordinate around strict curtain times, seamlessly holding dessert courses until after the show so theatregoers never feel rushed.

We didn’t quite get to dessert before the show, so they arranged for us to come back after to finish, this made for a lovely end to the night.

Before you head over

Practical advice on seating, payment, and pre-show dining from customer visits

  • Reserve an Alcove for Quieter Dining

The main dining room is lively and can become very noisy due to minimal noise dampening; book ahead and request a quieter alcove table if you prefer easier conversation.

  • Plan for Single-Bill Payment

Table bills cannot be split at payment, so organize your group payment method in advance before settling up.

  • Coordinate Pre-Theatre Timing Early

Evenings feature generous, hearty portions and candlelit dimming after 8:30 PM, but if you have a theatre curtain call, notify staff early—they can comfortably pace your courses or hold dessert until after your show.
