Book NowAbout Kenangan
Steps from Queen Victoria Market, Kenangan dishes out uncompromising Indonesian comfort with serious heat and zero shortcuts. The main draw is the Iga Bakar Kecap—massive grilled beef ribs charred on the outside and falling off the bone beneath a thick sweet-soy glaze. Diners frequently pair it with an extra scoop of house-pounded sambal terasi, a fiery, umami-packed hit that cuts straight through the richness. Between the crackling crispy duck, peanut-sauced tahu telur, and bowls of spiced rice, the kitchen moves fast to keep tables turning without skimping on portions. Meals finish cleanly with a cold bowl of es puter komplit.
- Charred Iga Bakar: Slow-cooked beef ribs charred with sweet soy glaze arrive tender and fall-off-the-bone tender.
- Pounded sambal terasi: The kitchen grinds uncompromised, fiery shrimp paste sambal that diners order as a punchy upgrade.
- Swift counter service: Hearty platters hit tables quickly even during peak lunch hours near Queen Victoria Market.
- Hefty portions: Generously portioned ribs, duck, and rice dishes deliver filling CBD value without cutting corners.

Why Diners Choose Kenangan
Discover why diners choose Kenangan for genuine Indonesian home cooking, fall-off-the-bone ribs, and vibrant shared feasts in Melbourne CBD.
Uncompromising Home-Style Indonesian Cooking
Kenangan refuses fusion adjustments, preparing homestyle classics, un-toned-down sambals pounded fresh, and signature dishes like galangal fried chicken and banana leaf pepes ikan.
Same authentic Indonesian cooking, no shortcuts, no fusion nonsense, just the real deal. Every dish is spot on, from the sambal to the mains to the little side dishes.
Elvi Lioe Signature Fall-Off-The-Bone Iga Bakar
The signature grilled beef ribs maintain a charred exterior while remaining tender, sweet, and succulent with traditional kecap manis seasoning.
my number one since before the rebranding is still the Iga Bakar Kecap (Grilled Beef Ribs) which has super soft falling-off-the-bone meat and “ngecap bgt” as an Indonesian would say.
Devina Gabriella Comforting Nostalgia of Home and Bali
Balinese and Indonesian expatriates find nostalgic connection in regional plates like Nasi Bali and Ayam Goreng Betutu that evoke fond memories of home.
The Nasi Bali here is absolutely the best in town – generous portions, rich flavours, and the perfect mix of sambal, meats and sides that instantly takes you back to Bali.
Devina Angelina Hearty Satisfaction and CBD Value
Substantial portions across duck, ribs, and rice dishes provide hearty satisfaction and value for hungry CBD diners.
Even with a gym-level appetite, the portions here were a lot to handle. Overall, considering the food quality, portion size, service, and central location right by Queen Vic Market, I found it very good value.
Am I XNhi? Communal Feasting for Groups and Families
A broad assortment of shareable mains—from grilled duck and crispy duck to skewers and ribs—makes the venue ideal for communal gatherings and family catch-ups.
The menu has a great variety of Indonesian dishes, perfect for both small catch ups or big group dinners.
Melissa Ng Welcoming Setting for Family Gatherings
Large platters designed for passing around let dining groups sample multiple regional specialties together.
Had lunch with my family there yesterday. Was very satisfied with the food and would go as far to say probably one of the best indonesian food Ive had in Melbourne!

Devina Gabriella Crispy Duck
Crispy Duck lives up to its name, the crispiest fried duck I have ever eaten in my life, that was so good, somehow not too salty and not too oily as well.
Devina Gabriella Nasi Bali
The Nasi Bali here is absolutely the best in town – generous portions, rich flavours, and the perfect mix of sambal, meats and sides that instantly takes you back to Bali.
Devina Angelina Pepes Ikan
The pepes ikan is great too, fresh fish wrapped up in banana leaf with all the right herbs and spices, proper homestyle cooking.

Bianca Wacker Tahu Telur
The tahu telur was beautifully cooked with a delicious sweet savoury sauce.
Kheng Tan Sambal Terasi
The highlight of the meal was definitely the shrimp paste sambal terasi. It’s an extra ($3), but absolutely worth every dollar. Rich, fragrant, spicy, and packed with umami, it elevated every dish we ordered.
Kheng Tan Tempe Mendoan
Lastly is the Tempe Mendoan, it’s the crispy version of mendoan and very good tempeh as well, no sour taste like some tempeh brand would have.

Gauge the Heat Levels
Diners note dishes like the sambal terasi, pounded fresh sambal, and spicy duck fried rice deliver authentic, un-toned-down heat. Request milder options or check spice levels upfront if you prefer less chili.
Balance Rich Specialties
Dishes like the signature Iga Bakar Kecap and Nasi Rendang feature rich kecap glazes, fatty meats, and very hearty portions; pairing them with a spicy sauce or a lighter plate like Sate Lilit keeps meals balanced.
Fast Solo and Workday Lunches
With counter ordering and fast turnaround times around ten minutes, sitting at the window seats by the tram corridor makes for an efficient solo work lunch during peak hours.
